We are pleased to share that a paper from the Developmental Neurobiology Lab (DENE) has just been published in Brain:
"KIF2A downregulation links amyloid-β to Tau phosphorylation in Alzheimer's disease"
In this study, we uncovered a molecular bridge between Amyloid beta (Aβ) accumulation and Tau-phosphorylation through the microtubule-associated protein KIF2A, an atypical kinesin with Microtubule depolymerizing activity. Using a wide range of molecular and cellular approaches in mice and humans, we identified KIF2A as an important factor in Alzheimer's disease (AD) neurodegeneration. Aβ accumulation alters KIF2A expression in neurons, and most importantly, KIF2A protein levels are drastically reduced in AD patients but not in patients with other primary Tauopathies. Our results shed light on the relationship between Aβ accumulation, KIF2A deregulation, microtubule dysfunction, and enhanced Tau phosphorylation in the context of AD.
