Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF)

irmp | Louvain-la-Neuve

The CRC has two gamma irradiators.

In the summer of 2025, the CRC commissioned a new Co-60 irradiator with an activity of 222TBq. The irradiator was delivered and installed by the Institute of IZOTOP.

  • Activity in July 2025: 222TBq
  • Opening angle of the collimator: 45°
  • Height of the median plane: 1250mm
  • Minimum dose rate (without shielding): 100rad/h [Si]
  • Maximum dose rate: 7.5 krad/h [Si]

The oldest is a panoramic 360° gamma irradiator composed of 3 independent sources. The remaining activity of ~3TBq allows irradiation between 36 rad/h[Si] and 100 rad/h[Si].

Dosimetry is carried out by two methods:

  • The dose rate at the component location is measured using an ionization chamber and an electrometer.
  • The integrated dose is checked with alanine pellets that can be measured internally at the CRC.
