On Vorticity, Impulse and Occult Practices in Numerical Models by Denis DUMOULIN

October 19, 2023

13:00

Louvain-la-Neuve

Place du Levant 2, Seminar room b.044

This brief seminar provides an tour d'horizon of an inviscid model for unsteady external aerodynamics within a two-dimensional framework. It introduces the fundamental components that form the basis of this model, illustrating how
basic vorticity elements are employed to characterize the behavior of fluid flows around solid airfoils or flexible self-propelled swimmers, enabling the calculation of both internal and external forces experienced by these entities.

The Multiple States of Elastic Rings: Stability and Transitions by John HUTCHINSON

November 21, 2023

10:45

Louvain-la-Neuve

Place Sainte Barbe, auditorium BARB92

Many well-known examples exist of elastic structures displaying distinctly different states under load, most commonly when they buckle, and there is considerable interest to design materials and structures capable of switching from one deformation state to another for functional purposes. In the world of structures, efforts are underway to exploit multi-state configurations especially in the design of foldable or collapsible structures.

Guillaume Rosinosky - StreamBed: capacity planning for stream processing

Guillaume Rosinosky is a post-doc researcher who will present StreamBed: capacity planning for stream processing Distributed Stream Processing (DSP) supports long-lived processing jobs over continuous data.

DSP engines scale out to support parallel processing of incoming data, until they reach the necessary volume of resources. Determining in advance the necessary resources or their configuration for long-running, large-scale jobs is desirable but difficult, as such jobs exhibit non-trivial scaling behaviors or responses to configuration changes.

Optimal design of zero-emissions energy systems: The role of energy storage by Paolo Gabrielli

November 07, 2023

10:45

Louvain-la-Neuve

Place du Levant 2, Seminar room b.044

The evidence that the anthropogenic alteration of the earth’s carbon balance is leading to climate change, together with the confirmation of its consequences, clearly indicates the necessity of finding new routes for energy provision. To mitigate climate change, and to keep global warming well below 2°C, we will likely need a large amount of variable renewable energy sources, and energy storage to compensate for their variability on multiple time scales.
