Comparing Planetary Helicopter Brownout Observations with Numerical Predictions for Ingenuity by D.-G. Caprace

October 17, 2024

13:00

Louvain-la-Neuve

Salle de séminaire, b.044, place du Levant 2

With more than 70 successful flights, NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter demonstrated the feasibility of aerial exploration on Mars and opened the door to similar missions on other planets. Future planetary rotorcraft will be bigger and heavier to accomplish new scientific and exploratory goals. However, the flow induced by highly loaded rotors poses a risk of forming dust clouds during take-off and landing, a phenomenon known on Earth as brownout.

Using high-fidelity immersed simulations and data-driven surrogate models for forward and inverse problems in fluid-structure interaction by Prof. Wim van Rees

October 07, 2024

13:00

Louvain-la-Neuve

Exploiting fluid-structure interactions using flexible structures and actuation can improve performance in biologically inspired swimming and morphing airfoils. Open challenges in this realm are the efficient high-fidelity simulation of such fluid-structure interaction phenomena, especially in three-dimensions, as well as solving inverse problems for optimal design and control.
