In the biomedical field, improving patients’ quality of life is perhaps the most rewarding outcome.
Louis Devillez, a researcher in the team of Renaud Ronsse, recently spent 3 months in the United States in the lab of Prof. Rouse at the university of Michigan .
His research aims to compensate for the loss of mobility in individuals with hip disarticulation (complete leg amputation) through the development of new powered prostheses. The project focuses on the hip joint, as only a handful of prototypes exist worldwide. It combines innovative mechanical design with control strategies inspired by human locomotion. By estimating the motion of the missing leg from that of the intact leg, the prosthesis can generate coordinated movements to support walking. The approach is evaluated experimentally and implemented on a prototype device.
During his stay at the university of Michigan, Louis tested different combinations of robotic leg systems, contributing to experiments aimed at advancing robotic prosthetic technologies that could improve mobility for people with limb loss, to evaluate their performance in real experimental conditions. This stay illustrates the importance of international collaborations in accelerating innovation in biomedical robotics.
