Students have a knowledge of medieval French and Latin
Main themes
The course will focus on a corpus of texts in medieval French (from the 12th to the 15th century) which are translations - adaptations - of Latin works from Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages.
We will focus on the following themes:

- the different types of adaptation of Latin texts (literal translation, gloss, moralisation, etc.) into medieval French
- the study of the production, circulation and reception of translations/adaptations
- the impact of translations/adaptations on the history of literature and the development of the French language
- comparative literary analysis between the Latin source and the target text
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
1 | Identify the texts of the programme and situate them in their production context |
2 | Translate Old and Middle French extracts into modern French |
3 | Carry out a comparative literary analysis of the texts of the programme |
4 | Construct a coherent discourse on the issues of origin, reception and circulation of texts in literature. |
