Main themes
The course aims to problematise key notions of literary historiography such as "baroque" and "neo-baroque" through the concrete analysis of literary works considered in their cultural context. In this way, the separations between Spanish and Latin American literatures will also be questioned, as well as the relationship between literature and painting.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1 | Problematise a key concept in artistic and literary history, such as the Baroque, by situating it in different cultural traditions; |
2 | Situate a 17th century Spanish literary work in relation to its social and artistic context; |
3 | Situate a Spanish-American literary or cinematographic work from the 20th and 21st centuries in relation to Baroque aesthetics and decolonial intention; |
4 | Analyse ekphrasis in a given literary text. |
This learning unit contributes to the development and command of the following skills and learning outcomes of the ELAL programmes (ELAL learning outcomes): 1.5, 2.7, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.3
Content
After defining and problematising the category of 'Baroque' in Spanish literary and artistic historiography, the first part of the course will examine a corpus of canonical Spanish works from the 17th century in the light of certain formal characteristics (framing) or themes of the Baroque (the question of the subject and doubt, etc.). A second part will show how artistic, literary and/or cinematographic works take up a Baroque aesthetic from a 'contraconquista' perspective (Lezama Lima). In this way, aesthetic analysis will be extended into a decolonial approach.
Teaching methods
The course will alternate between lectures, discussions of articles and literary or film analyses presented by small groups of students.
Evaluation methods
Participation in the course will be subject to continuous assessment that will be summed up in the final mark. The examination will be written. At the September session, only the written exam will be taken into account.
