Main themes
This research seminar addresses the issue of expressing causal discourse relations in Dutch. There is a long linguistic tradition in this field. Students will be invited to replicate linguistic or psycholinguistic studies focusing on: 
  • The adequacy of the choice of one causal connector over another 
  • The relationship between subjectivity and causality 
  • The impact of the presence vs. absence of linguistic markers on comprehension 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Master the different types of methodologies and the conceptual foundations used in Dutch linguistic research.
 
2 Replicate a scientific study on the expression of causality in Dutch (linguistic or psycholinguistic)…

In 2022-2023, the seminar will focus on an empirical study in the framework of the FRS-FNRS project "How do grammar and discourse interact? Evaluation methods
The evaluation will be based on students' active involvement in the seminar (20%, no repass possible for this part). It will also involve a written research report of an empirical study linked to the seminar topic (80%).
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity. Scientific integrity requires that sources be cited, and the use of AI must always be reported. The use of artificial intelligence for tasks where it is explicitly forbidden will be considered as cheating.
