Introduction

The primary goal of medicine is to improve the health of individuals and populations. To achieve this, physicians must understand how human beings function, from the cell to the organs and systems that compose them. They must also master the mechanisms of disease in order to prevent, diagnose, and treat them.

Medical studies last six years: three years to obtain a bachelor's degree and three years to obtain a master's degree.

Once graduated, physicians must further specialize before being able to practice their profession independently and legally. These specializations, lasting three to six years, primarily consist of practice supervised by supervisors. During their specialization, physicians practice their profession and are financially independent.

Your profile

Successful medical studies require solid cognitive skills: written and oral fluency in your native language, the ability to analyze a problem, memorization skills, the ability to synthesize, master abstraction, etc.

However, these skills alone are not enough to guarantee success. You are the primary driver of your success! You will therefore need to persevere, make a continuous effort without being discouraged by failures, with a constant focus on self-improvement and excellence. You will need to learn to manage your time, both your work time and your leisure time; this management will depend on your learning abilities.

Your future job

Medical studies aim to develop the human and scientific skills essential to professional practice: prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, listening, empathy, respect, and discretion in dealing with patients, their families, and healthcare teams.

Most students become practitioners in general medicine or another specialty. However, many pursue research, either at a university or in industry. Still others choose forensic medicine, public health, or medical journalism.

Your programme

The Bachelor of Medicine program lays the scientific and humanities foundations necessary for medical practice. It includes the acquisition of fundamental scientific knowledge and skills, an understanding of the functioning of the human body and disease mechanisms, as well as advanced training in the humanities specifically focused on the ethical, professional, relational, and societal requirements of medical practice.

The first part of the clinical training is part of the third year (semiology, cardiology, pulmonology); the second part is given during the Master's program.

A large part of the training is based on apprenticeships, practical work, and internships. The practical work will give you the opportunity to apply concepts, practice your ability to read and interpret results, and exercise your critical eye for the data collected. A nursing internship in a hospital setting is part of the second year, and another with a general practitioner is included in the third year. It is also possible to complete a research internship in the third year.
