Professor Isabelle Huynen holds a Master Degree in Electrical Engineering (‘89) and a PhD in Applied Sciences (‘94) from Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.
Since 2009 Prof. Huynen is appointed as Research Director at the Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS), Belgium, and as Part-time Professor at Louvain School of Engineering (EPL) of UCLouvain, in the Electrical Engineering Division of the ICTEAM Institute.
Her current research is devoted to smart materials for electronics, using a multiphysics approach for the design and characterization and of nano-, bio-, and meta-materials and tunable devices from MHz to THz frequency range.
Up to now Prof. Huynen supervised 19 PhD thesis in Applied Sciences and 18 post-doctoral researchers, participated to examination board for 31 PhD theses, and was Principal investigator for 33 research contracts and grants. Funding sources are: FRS-FNRS, FSR UCLouvain, FRIA, IWT, RW-DGO6 & Marshall Plan, FEDER, EC FP6/FP7, PAI). Her work lead to the publication of 2 books, 5 book chapters, and 153 articles in peer-reviewed journals (Google Scholar h-index: 36 for 383 publications, 5513 citations).

- Annual Prize of the Royal Belgian Society of Electrical Engineers, obtained in 1989 for the Engineering Thesis entitled "Modélisation des interférences sur circuits microruban hyperfréquences"
- Prize G. Van der Linden (edition 1994) awarded by the Royal Academy of Belgium for Science, for the PhD thesis entitled: "Modelling planar circuits at centimeter and millimeter wavelength, by using a new variational principle".

My current research is devoted to smart materials for electronics, using a multiphysics approach for the design and characterization and of nano-, bio-, and meta-materials and tunable devices from MHz to THz frequency range.
More specifically this includes novel architectures of frequency-tunable hybrid and nanocomposite materials for joint thermal and electromagnetic management, tunable devices and antennas based on dielectric, semiconductor and ferromagnetic substrates for communications systems, and measurement techniques of electromagnetic parameters for various substances: solids, liquids, powders, films.
This research benefits from a free access to equipments and expertise available in the Welcome technological platform of UCLouvain, in which Prof. Huynen is strongly involved. Welcome is covering all aspects of electrical and electromagnetic characterization, from molecules to signals and from DC to sub-THz frequency range, including nano- and microstructures, integrated circuits and sensors, or communication systems.
