The valorisation process

Knowledge valorisation is the process of creating social and economic value from knowledge by linking different areas and sectors and transforming data, know-how and research results into sustainable products, services, solutions and knowledge-based policies that benefit society.


According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO):

 

Knowledge and technology transfer is a collaborative process that allows scientific findings, knowledge and intellectual property to flow from creators, such as universities and research institutions, to public and private users. K&TT serves to transform inventions and scientific outputs into new products and services that benefit society.

 

Knowledge transfer can take many forms, including consultancy, collaborative research, licensing, the creation of spin-offs and policy recommendations. It can benefit a wide range of audiences, including businesses of all sizes, from start-ups to large companies, as well as entrepreneurs, public authorities, policymakers, governments, citizens, and society as a whole.

LouvainTransfer aims to “connect research and society to build the world of tomorrow”. Its mission is to turn research findings into practical solutions. It can support you throughout the process of translating your research into real-world impact.

  • Research funding: disseminating calls for proposals, providing project development support, identifying partners and preparing budgets, managing intellectual property, etc.
  • Identification of research results with valorisation potential: project monitoring, liaison with researchers, prior art searches, invention disclosures, etc.
  • Maturation of research results: identifying the most appropriate pathway for knowledge transfer, support with patent applications, guidance on funding opportunities for collaborative research, proof-of-concept (POC) projects or spin-off creation, and identifying prospective partners or markets, etc.
  • Knowledge transfer: negotiations, licence contract, spin-off creation, etc.

 

LouvainTransfer has developed a range of tools to raise researchers’ awareness of the potential for translating their research findings into real-world applications, including:

  • seminars covering a range of relevant topics, including the fundamentals of knowledge transfer, intellectual property, patents and software licensing; 
  • the KarTO card game, designed to help researchers master the ins and outs of knowledge transfer;
