Abstract:
Insurance models have always been more than mathematical tools. They determine how information is transformed into risk profiles, how uncertainty is quantified, and ultimately how premiums are allocated. As insurance data become increasingly rich and complex, modern data science has given insurers unprecedented tools to discover patterns, refine risk assessment, and personalize premiums, but also raises new questions about how risk should be shared.
This thesis investigates how modern statistical learning methods can help understand, represent, and price heterogeneous insurance risks. Through clustering approaches, latent representations, and probabilistic models, this work develops new ways to uncover hidden structures within heterogeneous insurance portfolios while keeping interpretability at the centre. But understanding risk is only the first step. The way risk is priced is also a societal choice. This thesis therefore studies how fairness constraints can be integrated into insurance pricing models, from distributional corrections to fully integrated Bayesian frameworks. Instead of searching for a single definition of fairness, it explores how different notions of equity reshape premiums, uncertainty, and portfolio balance.
At the intersection of actuarial science, machine learning, and regulation, this thesis highlights a fundamental principle: models do not simply learn patterns from data. They define how risk is understood, compared, and shared. Because in insurance, the question is never only what the data says. It is also what we choose to do with it.
