Daniela Perrotti
Professeure
Daniela Perrotti is Professor of Landscape at the UCLouvain Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urban Planning. She also sits in the Board of Directors of the Louvain Research Institute for Landscape, Architecture and Built Environment (LAB).
Her research is an inquiry into the potential of urban metabolism theory and models to advance evidence-based understanding of the relations that urban communities establish with natural resources. Her work positions itself distinctively in the urban metabolism scientific landscape by operating along two novel lines of research.
The first provides a critical revision of the ‘urban metabolism’ paradigm through more robust interdisciplinary methods that can favour an ‘agentic understanding’ of metabolic processes and deeper descriptions of society-nature relations in cities.
The second line operationalises the first by concentrating on the establishment of more comprehensive metabolic knowledge frameworks to analyse the links between the biophysical foundations of socioeconomic development, natural capital, and human wellbeing via ‘ecosystem service’ and ‘green infrastructure’ perspectives.
Both lines of research include retrospective evaluations of previously conducted research as well as a set of pilot projects on the co-design of new urban metabolism models and decision support systems involving scientists in engineering, social and natural sciences and public/industry stakeholders.
A particular strength of Daniela's work is its international and interdisciplinary scope. In the last ten years, she has secured highly competitive funds across Europe (e.g. EPSRC/UK, CNRS/France, MIUR/Italy, FNRS and Innoviris/Belgium) and serves/has served as Principal Investigator and co-Investigator for several research projects on integrated urban metabolism modelling approaches, in collaboration with public/industry and academic partners in several countries. These include research partnership in the UK (Universities of Reading, Portsmouth, Leeds), Finland (Aalto University), Netherlands (Wageningen University and Research Centre, Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions AMS), Denmark (University of Southern Denmark, Life Cycle Engineering), France (French National Institute for Agricultural Research INRA Versailles-Grignon, School of Landscape Architecture Versailles, Institut d’Aménagement et d’Urbanisme University of Lille), Italy (Polytechnic University of Milan), Spain (Polytechnic University UP of Valencia), China (Xi’an Jiaotong University), Brazil (Federal University of Mato Grosso and Federal University of Goias), Algeria (Polytechnic School of Architecture and Urbanism EPAU) and India (University of Delhi).
Prior to joining UCLouvain, she was one of the founders of the Department of Architecture and the Urban Living Group at the University of Reading coalescing research labs and design practices in the UK.
Daniela currently leads the Urban Metabolism interdisciplinary research group at UCLouvain, involving postdoctoral and doctoral researchers and early-career scientists under her supervision as well as collaborations with leading academics, practitioners and decision-makers in Belgium, across Europe and in the Global South.
