International student applications

Are you a foreign national (from an EU or non-EU country) and would like to enrol at UCLouvain? Here's what you need to know:

how to enrol and settle in on the university campus;
specific requirements for non-EU students;

In cases of re-enrolment, our service may ask you to complete a Belgian student status declaration.

Please note that applications for assimilation must be submitted until 1st December of the current year at the latest. The relevant documents may then be submitted until 15 April.

If you are from outside the European Union and do not have Belgian student status, there is a €200 application fee payable when you confirm your online application. This fee will be deducted from your tuition fee if your application is accepted. The fee is non-refundable if your application is not accepted.

We do not charge an application fee for the following:

- specialised master’s courses;

- PhDs or doctoral training;

- international joint diplomas (the award of a single diploma by several partner institutions);

- Erasmus exchanges.

Find out if you meet the Belgian student status criteria for your situation. Based on this information, the assimilation declaration should be completed and sent to the Registration Department.

You have the nationality of an EU member state.

All you need to show is a valid identity document or a recent certificate of nationality.

You are a long-term resident of Belgium or have a permanent residence permit for a European Union country (1).

You must submit one or more of the following, depending on your situation:

- copy of the long-term resident's EC card (D or L card);

- copy of the CIRE, unlimited stay (B card), or of the foreign national card, unlimited stay (C or K card);

- copy of the EU citizen's family member’s residence permit (F card);

- copy of the EU citizen's family member’s permanent residence permit (F+ card).

You are a Belgian refugee or stateless person, or you benefit from subsidiary protection (2).

You must submit one of the following:

- copy of Annex 25 or 26 completed by the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons, together with a recent or recently renewed "orange card" registration (for refugee and stateless students);

- a copy of both sides of the B card (for refugee students);

- copy of both sides of the A card or B card, and a decision from the Foreign Nationals Office attesting to subsidiary protection status (for students under subsidiary protection).

You have a residence permit valid for more than three months and you receive professional* ** or replacement income in Belgium (3).

You must submit a copy of both sides of a residence permit valid for more than three months and one of the following, depending on your situation:

- six payslips issued in the 12 months preceding the application (if you are in employment);

- a document certifying that you have received unemployment benefits, a pension or an indemnity from the mutual insurance company (in the case of replacement income).

(*) "Real and effective professional activity is deemed to be that for which the remuneration corresponds and has corresponded, over 6 of the 12 months preceding registration, to half of the guaranteed minimum average monthly remuneration (RMMMG) set by the National Labour Council".

(**) Equivalent to an average of €1,014 per month (updated on 18/04/2025).

You receive social assistance from the CPAS (public social welfare centre) (4).

You must submit a recent certificate issued by the CPAS.

You have a father, mother, legal guardian, spouse or legal cohabitant who is a national of an EU country or who meets one of the above criteria (5).

You must submit documents concerning yourself and a document proving your family relationship:

- Father or mother : birth certificate or official record of household composition;

- Spouse : recent marriage certificate legalised by the Belgian embassy or consulate in your country of origin, or a recent marriage certificate if you live in Belgium;

- Legal guardian : recent guardianship certificate legalised by the Belgian embassy or consulate in the country of origin, or issued by the relevant Belgian authorities if applicable. Please note that a financial guarantor is not a legal guardian;

- Legal cohabitant : recent certificate of legal cohabitation issued by the belgian local authority.

You are in receipt of a scholarship from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation or the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD) (6).

You must submit a copy of your scholarship award certificate.

You have a long-term residence permit for a EU member state (7).

You must submit:

- copy of both sides of the identity document proving long-term residence (5 years) in a European Union member state; and

- a copy of both sides of the Belgian residence permit.
