Message from Françoise Smets, UCLouvain rector-elect

What are her goals as rector?

To restore enthusiasm for the university via a genuine change of vision: a UCLouvain that is attentive to and listens to people, rich in its diversity and inspired by its expertise, grateful for the work of every university community member, energised and excited to build the UCLouvain of the future.

Dr Smets believes in the need to restore enthusiasm for the university so that it once again becomes a place of fulfilment, where independence and respect are guaranteed; where we can take the time to consider different viewpoints and skills to better meet future challenges; where it is possible to express disagreement without fear of encouraging the confrontation of ideas as an instrument for reflection, debate and finding solutions.

In her view, the current societal context should encourage universities to give priority to the question of the meaning of their work, which refers to the need to both identify clearly and collectively the aims of their work and preserve the conditions that make it possible.

Her priorities for UCLouvain (2024–29)

Convinced that UCLouvain is experiencing a decisive moment in its development on the eve of its 600th anniversary, Dr Smets wants to rethink its role in society so that it can fully occupy its rightful place.

The guiding priorities will be individual fulfilment and UCLouvain’s social responsibility:

  • Seeing those who work or study at UCLouvain flourish is essential in her eyes: “UCLouvain relies on the commitment and enthusiasm of each and every one of us. I want to be able to do something about excessive workloads and reduce the pressure many feel.”
  • Governance that is more participatory will also be introduced and additional resources allocated to achieving academic success, including specific support for those who have to work to pay for their education.
  • Dr Smets wants to improve PhD students’ career development and follow-up. “The aim of this paradigm shift is to transform UCLouvain into a people-based university.”
  • Another objective is to take action on UCLouvain’s social responsibility, including issues related to societal transitions. The university is at the heart of sustainable development objectives. In addition to preserving the planet and ensuring its viability, Dr Smets intends to strengthen social equity and increase well-being for all. She wants UCLouvain to position itself as an exemplary stakeholder in the dynamics of societal change, through its educational programmes, research and internal operations.
  • Another challenge is UCLouvain’s multicampus nature: “It puts us in touch with different audiences and ecosystems. This is a dimension that I would like to develop through the formulation of genuine campus projects and an examination of UCLouvain governance, which must fully embrace its eight campuses.”
  • Equity, transparency, diversity, inclusion and tolerance are major issues that she will address during her term of office. A pro-rectorate will be dedicated to these issues.
