Philippe Chatelain
Professeur ordinaire
BRIEF BIO
Aerospace researcher, lecturer, space enthusiast and glider pilot, Philippe Chatelain attempts to spread his passions among his students and research colleagues through inter-disciplinary efforts and curiosity-driven problems. His recent outreach efforts of note include gliding flight seminars for undergraduate students and the development of an affordable glider-based zero-g experimental bench.
Researcher in fluid mechanics with interests focused on vorticity-dominated flows, their efficient simulation in HPC contexts and their exploitation through novel AI-based control approaches. Philippe Chatelain has brought several contributions to vortex methods, enabling benchmark-defining simulations in fundamental and applied vortex dynamics, in domains such as wind energy, bio-locomotion and aeronautics. Recipient of an ERC-CoG in 2017, he has initiated a broad effort on collective learning by flow devices within wake flows such as those encountered in wind farms or aircraft formations. He is the co-founder of Wake Prediction Technologies, a spin-off company providing services in wake phenomena for aerospace and energy stakeholders.
