Historical and contemporary demography of Belgium

DEMO

The demography of Belgium and its "territories" constitutes an important part of the research activities carried out in DEMO. This research, carried out both in a historical and contemporary perspective, is based on an exceptional statistical heritage available since the 19th century on a fine spatial scale (municipalities, cities, districts, etc.). These include population registers, annual surveys of population movement and civil status, population censuses and, more recently, the National Register. Current research themes focus on internal and international migration, social and spatial disparities in mortality, population ageing, fertility from the early 19th century to the inter-war period and ancient demographic systems. In addition, several decision-making tools are being developed, such as CYTISE, the geostatistical dashboard of Walloon municipalities and districts and population prospects at the level of Belgian municipalities.
