Menno P. Witter is professor of Neuroscience at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience at NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1985 at the VU University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he subsequently started his independent research on the anatomical organization of the hippocampal region and became full professor in 1996. He moved to the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience in 2007, continuing a productive collaboration with May-Britt and Edvard Moser that started in 2000, leading to the discovery of grid cells, for which the Mosers were awarded the Nobel prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2014. He is an elected member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters and of the Norwegian Academy of Science. His current research focusses on the structural neurobiology of the entorhinal cortex and its contributions to learning and memory and the initiation of Alzheimer's disease.
