Description

Since its foundation, Belgium has had a representative system based primarily on the election of political representatives to assemblies. The legal rules governing the organization of these elections and the political phenomena that occur when they are held have evolved considerably over the last two centuries, while electoral systems have multiplied in the wake of the federalization of the Kingdom and the construction of Europe. This book proposes a systematic study of these changes, with 25 chapters grouped into five main thematic sections, dealing respectively with the notion of representative democracy, the actors involved in elections, the electoral campaign, voting procedures and post-electoral issues.

The interdisciplinary approach inaugurated in the first edition published in 2012 and reinforced in the second edition six years later is confirmed in this new edition, which brings together contributions from almost fifty specialists in law and political science, but also in sociology, communication, history and geography. These authors offer their reflections on Belgian democracy, taking particular account of recent developments, such as the consequences of the legal changes brought about by the sixth reform of the State, the upheavals in the balance of power between political parties, and the changes in electoral rules which have been compiled by the editors of the book in a Code of Electoral Law, published by the same publisher.
