The aim of my thesis is to design an open-source early warning system capable of detecting oil spills from different types of freely available satellite imagery, such as SAR, multispectral and GNSS-R images. A certainty index will also be developed to give a level of confidence to the detections made. We will also evaluate the capabilities and benefits of adding numerical modeling to such a system, using open-source oil slick drift models. The system will be designed to be easily adaptable to all coastal areas, and will be made available to the scientific community.
