Méthodes numériques multi-échelles
Nous développons des outils de simulation basés sur des méthodes numériques multi-échelles telle la méthode des éléments finis. Ces méthodes numériques utilisent des maillages non structurés dont la résolution est variable. Il est donc possible d'augmenter la résolution localement, uniquement dans les régions où l'échelle des processus le nécessite. La flexibilité des maillages non structurés permet ainsi de représenter une plus large plage d'échelles spatiales et d'optimiser les ressources de calcul. Dans ce cadre, nous participons au développement du modèle hydrodynamique SLIM. Ce modèle est utilisé pour un grand nombre d'applications, allant de l'étude de la connectivité au sein de la Grande Barrière de Corail à la modélisation du continuum terre-mer dans des systèmes fluviaux complexes. Par ailleurs, nous étudions également les propriétés mathématiques de modèles permettant de simuler la propagation d'ondes dans des écoulements géophysiques.
Modèles de dispersion non Browniens
Nous utilisons des méthodes de modélisation stochastique pour simuler la dispersion de traceurs dans des systèmes complexes, tels des écoulements turbulents ou des milieux hautement hétérogènes. Ces modèles de dispersion ne sont pas basés sur l'hypothèse de mouvement Brownien mais suppose plutôt que les fluctuations aléatoires des particules suivent un processus de Lévy. Les nuages de particules peuvent dès lors être représentés par des distributions de Lévy qui forment une famille incluant la distribution normale ainsi qu'un ensemble d'autres distributions dites "à queues épaisses". Les modèles Eulériens dérivés à partir de ces distributions font apparaître des opérateurs de diffusion d'ordre fractionnaire pour lesquels des schémas numériques adaptés sont développés. De tels modèles sont utilisés pour des applications en finance, en hydrologie ou encore en biologie et permettent de représenter l'effet des variations "extrêmes" pouvant avoir lieu au sein de systèmes complexes.
