Marie Courtoy started a PhD in January 2020 within the Research Team on European Laws and Migration (EDEM) at UCLouvain, under the supervision of Sylvie Sarolea and Marie-Claire Foblets. Her thesis focuses on the theme of environmental migration in the broader context of environmental justice. She is mixing anthropology and law, in collaboration with the Department of 'Law & Anthropology' of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology.
She holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and anthropology and another in law (Université Saint-Louis - Brussels) as well as a master's degree in law (UCLouvain), during which she carried out an exchange in Geneva. Her dissertation was awarded the prize for the best dissertation of the Faculty of Law of UCLouvain (Jacques Falys Prize) as well as the prize for the best dissertation of the Faculty of Economic, Social, Political and Communication Sciences of the University Saint-Louis (ESPO Dissertation Prize).
Before starting her PhD, she also completed various internships, notably at the European Court of Human Rights and at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She also participated in a research project at the Catholic University of Bukavu.
