Fish facility

The current fish facility houses two fish species, zebrafish (Danio rerio) and African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchuis furzeri) and one amphibian species, African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis).

With a capacity to hold more than 1500 fish, the facility possesses both polycarbonate and glass aquariums, the latter used for toxicology experiments. Both fish species are also bred and reared on-site.

It also contains experimental rooms for each species as well as quarantine space.

  • The short-lived GRZ strain of killifish are used to explore underlying mechanisms of aging.

  • The African clawed frogs are routinely used to explore the function of aquaporins.
