The WAL'PROT 5 project (05/02/2024 – 31/12/2025) is part of the WAL'PROT project portfolio, which includes UCLouvain, ULB, ULiège and UMons, as well as Celabor, CER, Cetic and CRA-W.
The aim of the WAL'PROT FEDER project portfolio is to study the deployment of alternative protein value chains for the human food sector. It targets various raw materials such as dedicated crops, discarded plant materials, co-products from the agri-food industry and new protein sources (microalgae and insects), as well as a cascade recovery model for all by-products generated during protein transformation processes through a multi-sectoral approach.
More specifically, WAL'PROT_5_UCLouvain aims to determine the in vitro quality of alternative proteins developed by WAL'PROT portfolio partners:
- By assessing the digestibility of alternative proteins as part of a complete meal, and their impact on digestion and absorption of bioactive compounds.
- By determining the impact of amino acids after digestion and absorption of alternative proteins on the growth and differentiation of human muscle cells in culture.
The results of this study will contribute to the selection of high-quality alternative proteins, promoting muscle physiology and the bioavailability of bioactive compounds beneficial to health, meeting the program's objectives in terms of innovation for enhanced health and valorization of alternative proteins.
