Title : Corporate greening and employee green behavior – a multilevel analysis of sustainability paradoxes and green identity in the organizational context

This doctoral dissertation explores the sustainability tensions in employee green behavior and corporate greening activities. Through a paradox and identity theoretical lens, top-down as well as bottom-up perspectives on corporate greening are taken in three different studies. At first, the sustainability tensions that arise during the implementation of corporate greening activities in several business organizations and what consequences they have for employees and organizations are explored. The second study focuses on green employees in their effort to improve the organizational environmental sustainability through engaging in green behaviors. While doing so, these employees are often confronted with drawbacks and perceive a mismatch between their personal values and their organization’s on environmental sustainability - which often results in identity tensions for green employees. Lastly, the third study investigates the conjoint influence of employees’ green identity, perceived supervisory and organizational support towards the environment on employee green behavior. The integration of the two qualitative studies and one quantitative study offers new insights on paradoxical tensions and the organizational context of employee green behavior and corporate greening activities, bringing insightful theoretical and practical findings.
