Muography: Development of a Portable Detector and Analysis of the MURAVES Data by Samip BASNET
Pour l'obtention de grade académique de Doctorat en Sciences
This interdisciplinary project focuses on the development of “muography“, an imaging technique that relies on the measurement of the absorption or deviation of muons freely and abundantly produced by the interactions of cosmic rays with the atmosphere, by applying detection, simulation and data analysis methods developed in the context of High Energy Physics experiments. This thesis concerns two major aspects of muography and as such, it is divided in these two parts.
The first part involves the development an instrumentation of a portable, robust and gas-tight detector based on mini-glass Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) for multipurpose muography applications such as geophysical prospections and in archaeological/cultural studies. Preliminary results from the performance studies of the current prototype are shown and discussed, in addition to results from a novel multiplexing toy simulation to read multiple sensitive units with a single electronic channel.
The experiment involving muographic study of Mt. Vesuvius, namely MUon RAdiography of VESuvius (MURAVES) experiment, is the focus of the second part of this thesis. From the preliminary analysis of the data collected up to 2022 using two identical MURAVES detectors (NERO and ROSSO), the right-left asymmetry in density was observed, which seems to be consistent with the eruption history of Mt. Vesuvius from the geophysical point of view. In order to confirm this initial observations, a subsequent independent analysis was carried out and the initial results are presented and discussed.
