The summer Arctic sea ice is projected to disappear completely by the middle of the century in response to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, according to simulations conducted with the latest global climate models. The decrease in summer Arctic sea ice extent is marked by periods of rapid ice loss, which are expected to become more frequent in the coming decades. Improving our understanding of these events is essential because their potential impacts on the climate could be substantial. While it is well-established that Arctic sea ice loss can influence high-latitude climates, it can also impact mid-latitude climates through atmospheric circulation changes. However, significant discrepancies exist concerning the possible effects of Arctic sea ice loss on mid-latitude climates. In this talk, we will discuss the future likelihood of a rapid sea ice loss event and explore the potential climate consequences of such an event.
