Research title:

Flood routing and sediment transport induced by the breaching of landslide dams

Research summary:

Landslide dam is usually induced by the lateral obstruction of river channel with landslide, rock avalanche and debris flow, which typically comprises freshly deposited heterogeneous, unconsolidated earth materials and is vulnerable to failure. The dam break flow caused by the failure of landslide dam may induce intense sediment transport in the flowing water, which is one of the main factors in erosion-deposition processes. The erosion-deposition processes may lead to a time-variable bottom elevation, which further significantly change the morphology in local area and in turn influences the flow. In our research project, we aim to explore the influence of dam materials composition on the sediment transport and erosion-deposition mechanism, so as to analyze the flood characteristics and the morphology evolution.
