Head of IMAG

Frédéric Lecouvet MD-PhD

IMAG is the medical imaging research unit at UCLouvain. IMAG is part of the Radiology Department of the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (Brussels) and is associated with the Cliniques Universitaires Mont-Godinne (Yvoir).

We support a research program focused on the current medical imaging modalities of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) and Ultrasound (US). We aim at leveraging the diagnostic skills of these imaging modalities through development. By optimizing them, we ensure that these new modalities are applicable to daily clinical examination.

Oncological imaging is at the heart of our attention. With regard to prostate cancer and breast cancer, we are working on improving the diagnostic capabilities of MRI, monitoring the disease, and evaluating the effects of therapies.

In the field of lung cancer, we are working on improving the diagnostic and screening capabilities of low-dose radiation CT. We are also involved in test benches for ultrasound and ultrasound elastography (measurement of tissue elasticity) with our industrial partners in order to improve these techniques for diseases of the liver (hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer), gallbladder (cholecystitis), pancreas (cancer) and diaphragm dysfunction in children.

IMAG is :

  • A multi-disciplinary team (physicians, physicists, biologists, thesis students) dedicated to quality research and teaching in medical imaging.
  • A team of radiologists with diversified expertise (brain, cardio-thoracic, musculoskeletal, abdomen, pediatrics, women's imaging) addressing issues related to different medical disciplines
  • A large pool of state-of-the-art machines (MRI, CT, US) grouped together in a clinical imaging platform open to the UCLouvain research poles.
  • A network of academic (UCLouvain, ULB, UZB), industrial (Philips, Siemens, GE) and European (EORTC) partners promoting knowledge transfer, innovations and multicenter clinical trials.

More information on the research activities of the IMAG cluster can be found in the Institute's annual activity report.
