Making the organisation agile: identity construction and authority reconfiguration. Ethnography in a media company.

Organisational and managerial discourses promote collaborative and participative management practices in an attempt to provide with the most appropriate answer to the challenges currently faced by organisations evolving in a complex environment. While the literature mainly focuses on the design and implementation of these new organisation structures, the way they actually take shape and contribute to managers’ identity construction is less overtly investigated in the literature. Laurianne Terlinden's PhD thesis, directed by Prof. Laurent Taskin, thus aims at studying the transition of a media company towards an agile organisation by studying the construction of identity in this context. Using an ethnographic and abductive approach, the doctoral research develops three main research questions. Hence, it articulates issues of professional identity and the reconfiguration of authority in these new ways of working, in order to understand the work organisation that managers shape by integrating certain aspects of the organisational project and rejecting others. By doing so, the work provides with strong findings that support a better understanding of managers' responses to a deep organisational transformation of their environment.
