Introduction

The European project “Symbiotik” is about context-aware adaptive visualizations for critical decision making. It is led by Univ. of Luxembourg, with UCLouvain, Telefonica, and AEGIS.

The researcher will integrate the research group for human-computer interaction led by Prof. Dr. Jean Vanderdonckt inside the Louvain Research Institute in Management and Organization of the Université catholique de Louvain.

The Louvain Research Institute in Management and Organizations (LouRIM) mobilizes around 30 faculty members and 70 researchers from various and diversified fields such as economics, information systems, management sciences, operation research, psychology and sociology to address management questions of societal and economic relevance from a global point of view.  LouRIM members study the management of private and public organizations through fundamental, applied, empirical and experimental studies including the internal and external processes participating in the management and functioning of firms and organizations. Its research supports the teaching of the Louvain School of Management which is an EQUIS and CEMS accredited management school in Belgium, highly ranked in Europe and worldwide among research-based management schools. The environment offered by the Institute favors the development of a creative research with high added value completed with an efficient PhD training

 

Job description

The goal of the position is to advance research and development for adapting graphical user interfaces of dashboards by reinforcement learning.  The doctoral student will apply to become a member of the Doctoral School for Engineering Science and Technology (https://uclouvain.be/en/sectors/sst) offering a Doctoral Program in Computer Science, aiming to provide interdisciplinary and internationally competitive research training. A PhD thesis project will be submitted to this Doctoral Program.

The associated PhD thesis pursues the same goal as the project which is nevertheless open and flexible for new themes, such as Intelligent User Interfaces, Intelligent Visualization, and Natural Language Processing. The results of the research should be disseminated through scientific publications in journals and conferences. The position also involves participation to selected project meetings

 

Required qualifications and skills

The candidate should hold a master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or related disciplines with grade. Proven experience in research and development, via publications or personal projects, in Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, and/or Information Visualization, is an asset. Familiarity with reinforcement learning and adaptive user interfaces is also appreciated, albeit not mandatory. The candidate should benefit from a certified test of English level (e.g., TOEFL).
