Applications

  • Confocal microscopy allows for the determination of the cellular and subcellular localisation of proteins and biomolecules at high resolution, and the monitoring of their dynamics. Furthermore, combined with appropriate software, it is possible to obtain quantitative data on the molecule of interest.
  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has recently opened up a range of new possibilities for imaging and manipulating cell surfaces in their natural environment, complementing optical imaging techniques. It allows for the visualisation of cell surface structure at nanoscale resolution and under physiological conditions, and gives researchers the ability to localise unique receptors on the cell surface and quantitatively probe cellular interactions.
