A new study dedicated to the diet of the elderly is about to start at the CICN
Technology platform of UCLouvain, the CICN specialises in clinical trials in the field of nutrition.
Why should we care about the diet of our elderly?
In order to maintain good immune and muscular health, protein needs increase with age. However, the appetite of the elderly diminishes over the years and protein supplements, which are generally not very pleasant, increase the feeling of satiety. As a result, nutritional intake is not sufficient to meet needs. In most cases, this disequilibrium in the energy balance can lead to denutrition, which is responsible for a decline in general health.
This study - called DELICEN'S - should confirm that supplementing basic everyday foods directly with protein and pomegranate extract slows the onset of signs of denutrition and improves the quality of life of the elderly.
This project, supported by the Walloon Region, is innovative in that the enriched food products are specially designed by local food industries.
What profile of volunteers are we looking for?
- Be in good general health
- Be aged 65 or over
- Live at home and be able to travel to the CICN
- Agree to follow the proposed diet for 6 weeks
How is the study organised?
The study will run for 6 weeks with 2 visits to the CICN to :
- Validate the volunteer's eligibility and assess his/her baseline nutritional status
- Reassess their nutritional status and gather their opinions on the products they have eaten.
During the study, a weekly food collection will be organised at the CICN so that volunteers can collect their food packets to eat at home.
The food provided during the 6-week study is free for volunteers.
An allowance is provided to cover the costs associated with participation (travel).
The study protocol has been validated by the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc ethics committee.
When and how do you register?
Registration is now open and will close in mid-April.
If you would like to take part, please send an e-mail to cicn@uclouvain.be indicating your interest in the "Delicen's" study.
