This talk develops and defends a novel subjectivist view on meaningful work. I argue that work is meaningful for a worker when the worker has attachment-based reasons to engage in the work. I argue that this “attachment view” can explain variations in the meaningfulness of work and show how the view avoids apparent counterexamples. If I have time, I will end with some preliminary observations about meaningful work in an age of automation and AI.
