The International Governance of Democracy Protection: A comparative study of the Organization of American States and the European Union

Résumé
The democratization studies have produced relevant diagnosis about the outcomes and challenges for democracy. Generally, these studies privileged the role of domestic conditions as explanations for democratic transformation and promotion. The thesis dialogues directly with this literature, assuming the role of international actors, such as Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), as sources of democracy protection in world politics. Selecting the European Union (EU) and Organization of American States (OAS) as objects of study, this present thesis focused on conditions for IGOs to engage in democratic protection policies in moments of transition and discontinuity/breakdown of democracy.
