Abstract : The talk will be divided in 2 different parts. The first one will concern the role vision plays in shaping the interaction between finger and number representations. We will demonstrate that visual experience plays an important role in implementing the sensori-motor habits that drive the development of finger counting. The second part of this talk will concern the role vision plays in shaping the frames of reference (egocentric vs. allocentric) that are used to guide our sensory-motor experience. While it has been demonstrated that early visual deprivation prevents the automatic use of an allocentric frame of reference for coding touch, we will demonstrate that blind people are able to use allocentric coordinates when the task requires it.
