Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases

IONS

Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and related disorders are presenting us with a series of challenges. Taken as a whole, they are among the top ten causes of death for which effective treatments are sorely lacking. Affecting an ageing population, their prevalence is growing rapidly in our societies. Their progressive and fatal course makes them a terrible burden for patients and their families.

The aim of the research we are conducting is to develop accessible tools for early and reliable diagnosis of these diseases, to ensure better care for patients and the success of future treatments. Our approaches, which combine clinical and fundamental expertise, enable us to develop tests and collect information from patients, which in turn enables us to build the best possible models for exploring the mechanisms underlying these diseases, which are still not well understood.

The goal of this translational research by essence is to produce meaningful and applicable results moving basic science discoveries more quickly and efficiently into medical practice.
