WELBIO awards new ‘Advanced Grant’ to IREC

Bruxelles Woluwe

A new "Advanced Grant" awarded and another one renewed by WELBIO in our Institute

Prof Luc Bertrand (CARD/IREC) was awarded an "Advanced Grant" of WELBIO (administered through the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique) to develop his team's research on the identification of novel targets to treat cardiac hypertrophy and, more particularly, on the importance of a particular cell process called O-glcNAcylation in this pathology.

In addition, the "Advanced Grant" awarded to Prof Jean-Luc Balligand (FATH/IREC) in 2017 was extended for the period 2019-2021. His team's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of myocardial remodelling, which led to the identification of the water channels, Aquaporins, as critical modulators of cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis.

WELBIO (which stands for “Walloon Excellence in Life sciences and BIOtechnology”) is an inter-university life sciences research institute based in Wallonia, Belgium, and funded by the Walloon Region, with a mission to support strategic fundamental research through carefully selected projects from universities in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, with a view to translating their discoveries in all fields of biotechnology.
