Online Workshop: Writing the PhD Thesis

IREC Bruxelles Woluwe

11 mai 2020

Workshop by Julia Staykova-McKinnon, Ph.D.

Excellent science is not enough for writing a strong dissertation. Thesis reviewers often remark that many worthy projects are poorly structured, with key ideas not communicated clearly enough. An intelligent, up-to-date dissertation style will help you succeed with journal publications, fellowship applications, and the job search. Why? Because once you know how to talk convincingly about the strengths of your work, your next project will be easier to explain. This workshop will train you in the latest international trends specific to dissertation writing.

You will learn how to:

1. Use strong structure in the interpretative chapters: Introduction and Discussion.

2. Convey a compelling vision on the key ideas of your dissertation in Objectives, structure the Results chapter using informative section headings, and convey the longer-term trajectory of your work in Conclusions and Future Directions.

3. Organize information effectively, using a helpful chapter plan and informative titles.

4. Write an attractive abstract that sells the strengths of your work.

5. Use several strategies to overcome writer’s block.

6. Prepare for the oral defence.
