Main project: Optimisation and design of a modified AISI 410 martensitic stainless steel for automotive structural applications

The automotive industry is constantly looking for new materials for weight reduction and structural efficiency. Martensitic Stainless Steels are good candidates to meet these target performances. However, the effect of harmful microstructure constituents like coarse precipitates and residual ferrite on the mechanical properties is not yet fully understood. First, the relationship between structure and property is unveiled with experimental observations and finite element (FE) models. This translates structures into properties and identifies harmful microstructure constituents that might jeopardize performances. Next, computational thermodynamics is used to identify the best heat treatments to avoid unwanted phases and create microstructures that meet the required properties. The first part of the thesis (the translator model), successfully identified ferrite and carbides as harmful phases. The mechanical strength contrast between martensite and residual ferrite promotes strain partitioning into ferrite, which leads to premature damages nucleation and growth.
