Résumé
This work studies the question of what the relationship between liberty and happiness should be. To which extent might one be sacrificed for the sake of the other? Starting from an analysis of John Stuart Mill’s work, it will try to reconstruct both his position as well as the general utilitarian theory of such a relationship. Some issues with this theory such as the potentially sacrificial nature of liberty which it entails will be raised. The work then investigates the extent to which an indirect form of utilitarianism might provide a desirable alternative. Finally, it is in Aristotle’s eudemonism that the work finds a better ground for a new complete theory of the relationship between liberty and happiness.
