FEDER Projects

IDEES

The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector has a significant weight of the economy at world, EU and Wallonia scales.  This sector evolves very quickly and the Internet of tomorrow is a key element in the EU economic strategy.  IDEES FEDER project portfolio aims to advance ICT solutions developed in Wallonia to better serve the local economy based on the future Internet.

IDEES stands for The Internet of Tomorrow for the development of Companies, Economy and Society (Internet de Demain pour développer les Entreprises, l'Economie et la Société in French) and groups for interleaved projects.

  1. The first project concerns the Technological Foundations needed for future Internet.  Based on major progresses made in Cloud Computing, Big Data and the Internet-of-Things (IoT), the objective is to improve them in order for companies to take them up more easily.
  2. The goal of the second project is to implement Co-Innovation Processes with companies in order to accelerate the adoption and optimize the benefit of these technologies, within relevant sectors.
  3. The third project deploys Pilot Projects within specific sectors in order to validate the benefit of these new technologies, in several configurations.
  4. Finally, a Demonstration Area is implemented in order to inform about the research context, to ease interactions and experimentation, and showcase the developed technological capabilities and research results.

The contribution of UCLouvain Electronic Circuits and Systems (ECS group) to IDEES portfolio is in the Technological Foundations project and focuses on the study, model and implementation of smart objects and smart sensors for th IoT.  Specific attention is devoted to model and reduce their power consumption, study the sustainability aspects and emerging paradigms such as edge computing and embedded machine-learning.

Micro+

The Micro+ FEDER portfolio is composed of two projects: the Micro+ Socle project and the Micro+ Microsystems project.

The Micro+ Socle project aims at integrating and consolidating the skills and infrastructures required in the field of microsystems, installing new state-of-the-art tools, exploiting them with basic research and developing missing aspects of the value chain. The objective is to propose, for industrial research projects, an integrated offer of non-commercial services in advanced R&D, to Walloon research centers and SMEs, with environments, infrastructures, manufacturing and testing equipment and associated know-how.

The European Regional Development Fund and Wallonia are investing in your future.

Total cost: € 2,559,380 including ERDF: € 1,018,530, Wallonia: € 1,527,796 and UCL contributions: € 13,053

The objective of the Micro+ Microsystems project is to set up a complete platform of skills, equipments and know-hows in electronics and miniaturized sensors, integrating all the links of the embedded microsystems value chain, covering all levels of R&D, to meet the needs of the targeted developments by a large number of Walloon companies. And, in particular, microsystems (i) more autonomous, i.e. without battery replacement and with ambient energy recovery, (ii) more wirelessly communicating, by porting a network of objects, products or machines, (iii) more robust, i.e. resistant, reliable in harsh environments, in flexible polymers, textiles, composites, all in order to integrate electronics in new ecosystems.

The European Regional Development Fund and Wallonia are investing in your future. Total cost: 900.000 € including ERDF: 360.000 € and Wallonia: 540.000 €

CLEARPOWER

The FEDER CLEARPOWER project aims at the development of electrochemical energy conversion systems with optical functionalities, in particular transparent nano-structured Li-ion batteries. At the heart of the CLEARPOWER project lies the creation of a technology that allows the hybridization of energy production and conversion systems. Concretely, smart windows made by state-of-the-art additive methods will go beyond the state of the art in the efficiency of energy storage on translucent substrates and - in terms of connectivity to the micro-electrical grid - will offer new solutions for home automation. The project is developing a unique portfolio of intellectual property in the field of (i) advanced materials for energy storage and conversion on transparent and mechanically flexible substrates and (ii) in the recovery and management of energy for the next generation of buildings.

Total cost CLEARPOWER: 1.196.229,80 € with FEDER: 478.491,94 € and Wallonia: 717.737,86 €

Wal-e-Cities

Wal-e-Cities is a research project aiming at the development of Smart Cities in Wallonia in a specific context.
Wallonia consists of medium-size cities in a rural and urban small territory, with 5 main attractive and innovative poles, meaning that the Smart City concept has to be considered at a Smart Region level.

Wal-e-Cities aims to build an innovative citizen driven IoT solutions in mobility, energy efficiency, governance and wellness. All these developments are based on new wireless communication channels using street furniture and public lighting.

Wal-e-Cities is also market-oriented to facilitate the development of innovative ecosystems driving technological breakthroughs, addressing societal challenges, fostering star-ups, and giving Walloon companies a competitive advantage.
