International Philosophical Bibliography (IPB)

Louvain-La-Neuve

Répertoire bibliographique de la philosophie

Published since 1934 by the Higher Institute of Philosophy of the Université catholique de Louvain, the International Philosophical Bibliography (IPB) remains an indispensable research tool in philosophy.

The IPB has undergone a complete makeover ! The bibliography ceased to be published in printed form and has become a digital database. This new version is available on our website.

Available in print and on line on the Peeters Publisher's website from 1996 until the end of  December 2023, the database now has a new interface and is updated daily. The IPB now has its own website, which can be accessed via this page, the Presses Universitaires de Louvain or the UCLouvain libraries website. The bibliography is compiled by specialists who have privileged access to the contents of numerous books and scientific journals, thanks to regular collaboration with publishing houses. All data is subject to rigorous selection and meticulous verification to ensure its relevance and accuracy.

The IPB includes more than 12,000 new references per year: books, journal articles, collective works and reviews. It covers all areas of philosophy, in the main European languages, with particular emphasis on the history of philosophy and continental philosophy. By giving visibility to the publications of researchers and journals specializing in philosophy, the IPB helps to promote this discipline in many countries.

The IPB is designed to complement other bibliographic databases such as “Philpapers” and “Philosopher's Index” but differs from them in the many links created between references and the precise keyword indexing carried out by our team without recourse to artificial intelligence.

Bibliographic searches in the IPB

Thanks to its modernised interface, the IPB provides a pleasant and intuitive search experience. The manual addition of references and keywords also guarantees a high level of precision and relevance in the results obtained during your search.

The search is carried out using several criteria, which can be combined:

  • Personal names (over 84,000 names of authors, editors, translators, reviewers and contributors)
  • Titles of the article
  • Subjects of the article (people, works, keywords)
  • ISBN
  • DOI
  • Languages of publication
  • Year of publication
  • Type of document (articles, books and reviews)

These different criteria can be combined to refine the search for more targeted results. References are accompanied by abstracts where available.

The IPB also allows you to search for commentaries and studies on more than 3,000 works, including the classics of philosophy.

Exploiting and managing search results

IPB online is easy to navigate thanks to its many cross-references: from the volume to the articles, from the article to the whole issue or collection, from the work to the commentaries, from the publications to the reviews, etc.

DOI (digital object identifier) integration gives direct access to the text of the article or book, if it is available online.

IPB online allows you to manage your search: save, sort, send results to an e-mail address or export them in RIS format.
