Dual master’s degree programme in French and francophone studies
Jointly organised by the Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Université catholique de Louvain, in collaboration with the Université de Lausanne and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the programme in French and francophone studies will allow you to:
- benefit from a prestigious international programme;
- discover the many facets of French literature and its close links with other European literatures;
- meet renowned researchers in the fields of French language and French literature, in order to specialise in these areas;
- deepen your knowledge of other languages;
- broaden your cultural horizons;
- obtain two diplomas.

Application and admission
Due to the limited number of places you must submit an application for admission to the dual degree programme in French and francophone studies (DD-EFF).
Admission requirements
Students who meet the general admission requirements of the master’s programme in French and other Romance languages and literature, general orientation with research focus (ROM), may apply to the DD-EFF programme.
Application procedure
DD-EFF programme applicants must submit an application file, written in French and consisting of:
- a letter of motivation which specifies the choice of the desired partner university;
- an up-to-date curriculum vitae (maximum two pages);
- a digital photo in passport format;
- a copy of previous university diploma(s) and transcripts for each year of study;
- proof of knowledge of Italian, German or Spanish (level B2) if you wish to do your second year at the Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin or the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
Note: International applicants whose mother tongue is not French must provide proof of their knowledge of French (minimum C1).
The application must be sent in electronic format (one PDF document only) to the attention of the programme’s academic coordinator, Professor Agnès Guiderdoni, via the faculty’s International Relations Service.
Note: International candidates admitted to the dual degree programme must also apply for admission to UCLouvain.
Application deadlines
To attend the second year of the master’s programme in 2022-23
It is still possible to submit an application: deadline 30 September 2022.
To attend the second year of the master’s programme in 2023-24:
Belgian students and nationals of European Union countries must submit their application for the dual degree programme’s 2023-24 academic year by 31 May 2023.
Students from outside the European Union must submit their application for the dual degree programme’s 2023-24 academic year by 30 April 2023.

Dissertation
The master’s dissertation is written under both a host university supervisor and a UCLouvain supervisor. Students admitted to the DD-EFF programme must start thinking about the subject in their first year, after consultation with the programme manager.
Scholarships
Students admitted to the DD-EFF programme are eligible for an exchange scholarship.

Partner university enrolment
Students admitted to the DD-EFF programme must enrol at the partner university, but without paying the tuition fee. Procedures and timing vary from one partner to another. Students will be informed upon admission of partner university enrolment procedures.
Tuition fee
For the duration of the master’s programme, UCLouvain DD-EFF students enrol at UCLouvain and pay its tuition fee. At the partner university, they only pay administrative fees, if any.
Diplomas
UCLouvain awards the diploma for the 120-credit master’s degree course in French and other Romance languages and literature, general orientation with research focus, to students enrolled at UCLouvain who have passed the entire exam. Depending on their background, they will receive at the same time the diploma of:
- “Master mention lettres” (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3)
- “Laurea magistrale in Lingue e letterature europee, americane e postcoloniali LM-37” (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia)
- “Master of Arts” (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)
NB: Collaborations with the University of Lausanne and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid do not lead to a dual diploma. Students who complete their second year in Lausanne or Madrid receive a transcript of records from these universities.

Dual degree student enrolment procedure
This procedure concerns students selected by the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3, the Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and who wish to study for one term/academic year at UCLouvain.

As soon as the selection process is complete, partner university coordinators email student admission files to UCLouvain administrative coordinators.

UCLouvain administrative coordinators contact the selected students directly to start the enrolment application procedure. Depending on their previous experience, the selected students will be enrolled in the master’s programme in Romance languages and literature, general orientation (ROM2MA) or the master’s programme in Romance languages and literature, French as a foreign language orientation (FLE2MA).
- All enrolment applications for the 2021-22 academic year must be submitted by 30 August 2021. The enrolment application procedure is in two stages. Applicants must:

complete an online enrolment application form;

then send the required documents by post.

Note: Dual degree students send the documents directly to the dual degree programme administrative coordinator, who will follow up with the Enrolment Office.
Dual degree programme students pay tuition fees at their home university for the duration of the programme.
If they come to UCLouvain during the second term of the first year of the master’s programme, they pay:
- a €66 administrative fee for the first year; and
- a €66 administrative fee at the time of re-enrolment for the second year (even if they are no longer at UCLouvain in this second year).
Students who come to UCLouvain in the second year pay a €66 administrative fee for the second year only.
Enrolment procedure for selected exchange students
This procedure concerns students selected by the Université de Lausanne and by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
Students who are selected for an exchange during the first semester of the 2021-22 academic year must be nominated by 15 May 2021 and send their application as exchange students by 31 May.
Students who are selected for an exchange during the second semester of the 2021-22 academic year must be nominated by 15 November 2021 and send their application as exchange students by 30 November.
