Public authorities’ support for knowledge transfer

The Brussels Capital Region, the Walloon Region and the European Union, through its European Social Fund, have introduced several initiatives to encourage research development and enhance their economic benefits. Examples include mandates for a ‘technology adviser’, an ‘expert technology developer’ and an ‘expert human and social sciences developer’; the ‘First Spin-Off’ and ‘Launch’ programmes; and patent and maturation funds.

Another example is a project called ‘MIRVAL+’ (from the French ‘MIse en Réseau pour PLUS de VALorisation, or ‘Networking to Enhance Research Development’), which was launched as part of the European Structural Fund’s 2014-20 Framework Programme. MIRVAL+’s first priority is to fuel ‘enterprise and creativity’ by raising awareness of and supporting innovation and creativity, and through training, networking and additional support.

This six-year project (2015-20), carried out in partnership with EasyNove network operators, is an important funding programme for the Knowledge Transfer Offices (KTOs) of universities and secondary schools of the French Community of Belgium. MIRVAL+ aims to increase the impact of applied research on business innovation and enhance knowledge transfer to civil society.
