Age and sex compositional gaps across rural and urban populations.

The differential timing and levels of natural increase, interacting with urbanization, create profound gaps in population age and sex composition across rural and urban sectors. Age structures and sex ratios establish critical parameters for understanding development and the implications of a rural/urban gap may range from an extended demographic dividend to urban violent conflict or to persistent gender inequalities. We probe the extent of the age and sex structure gaps in developing countries, with particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa. We examine these gaps across stages of demographic transition and consider the role of rural-urban migration in shaping these gaps.
