The accredited internship in the master's programme:
All students at the Louvain School of Engineering have the chance to carry out an optional internship as part of their master's programme (course LFSA 2995). The internship is worth 10 credits. The main aim of the internship is to complete the student's scientific education with the discovery and learning of the role of an engineer by confronting them with various technical, interpersonal and managerial problems encountered in a professional situation.
To be accredited (10 ECTS), the internship must:
- Last for at least nine weeks of fulltime work (45 working days), or the equivalent pro rata of part-time work (at least half-time).
- Be conducted in a company or research centre (excluding UCL), in Belgium or abroad.
- Be conducted as part of the student's master's programme.
- Cover a subject relevant to the student's educational level and specialist field.
- Be supervised through a placement agreement (see useful documents), which must be approved at least six weeks before the placement begins and signed by the academic supervisor, the company and the student.
- Be assessed by the academic team based on a placement report written by the student and an oral presentation to an external jury (consisting of faculty alumni and placement supervisors who wish to take part).
If the internship does not meet these criteria, it can still be carried out as a voluntary internship.
Voluntary internship:
The internship will be worth three ECTS credits as part of the student's programme (LFSA 1995 for bachelor's and LFSA for master's), but will not count towards the student's mandatory credits.
Within this framework, voluntary internships must:
- Be conducted as part of the student's bachelor's or master's programme.
- Cover a subject relevant to the student's educational level and specialist field.
- Be supervised through a internship agreement (see useful documents), which must be approved at least six weeks before the placement begins and signed by the academic supervisor, the company and the student.
- Within this framework, voluntary internships do not need to:
- Meet a minimum/maximum threshold in terms of duration (apart from the constraints of the student's programme)
- Be assessed by the academic team. An assessment grid will be completed by the internship supervisor and given to the student during an interview at the end of the internship.
