A DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN ECONOMICS in the field of:

International Trade

Starting in September 2018

Job description

  • The doctoral project aims to study the distributional effect of globalization in both developed and developing economies. The project will address distributional issues between income groups as well as between regions.
  • The project is financed by an EOS grant “Winners and Losers from Globalization and Market Integration: Insights from Micro-Data” in collaboration with the universities of Namur, Antwerp and the KU Leuven. The candidate will be based at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), but will also benefit from a strong link with other members of the project in partner universities.
  • The candidate will write a doctoral thesis under the main supervision of Gonzague Vannoorenberghe and Florian Mayneris. The candidate will work at IRES and in particular interact with the other professors involved in the project at UCL, notably Frédéric Docquier William Parienté, as well as two other PhD students and a postdoc researcher on the project. The economics department in Louvain-la-Neuve provides a vibrant academic environment, with currently 18 faculty members and more than 40 PhD students.
  • In addition to performing the tasks of the research project, the PhD candidate will improve his/her research skills by completing a doctoral training program in Economics and will actively participate in the research activities of the institute.   • The position does not come with any teaching duties.

Profile

  • The candidate is (or will be at the end of this academic year) holder of a Master degree in Economics (minimum 5 years of study), which should be completed with honors. Preference will be given to students who have completed a second Master year with a research orientation and students who have taken courses or written a thesis in the field of international trade.
  • The candidate works independently, accurately and systematically.
  • The candidate must have a deep interest in questions related to globalization, a thorough knowledge of econometrics, and should be proficient in English.

General conditions

  • The position is open starting September 2018 for two years, with an additional two years subject to a successful intermediary evaluation.
  • Salary, net of taxes, is of the order of 1.900€ per month. The recruited person benefits from the complete Belgian social insurance scheme (health care, etc.) without additional expenses.
  • IRES will provide the PhD student with office space and computer facilities.

A POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN ECONOMICS in the field of:

  • The project is financed by an EOS grant “Winners and Losers from Globalization and Market Integration: Insights from Micro-Data” in collaboration with the universities of Namur, Antwerp and the KU Leuven.   • The candidate will work at IRES, in close collaboration with Florian Mayneris, William Parienté, and Gonzague Vannoorenberghe, as well as three PhD students and another postdoc researcher on the project. The economics department in Louvain-la-Neuve provides a vibrant academic environment, with currently 18 faculty members and more than 40 PhD students.
  • The position does not come with any teaching duties.

Profile

  • The candidate must hold of a PhD degree in economics by August 2018. The candidate must have a proven record of high quality research in the fields of international trade and/or development economics.
  • The candidate should not have stayed more than 12 months in Belgium during the last three years.
  • The candidate should have the potential to publish in the top journal in economics.
  • The candidate must have a deep interest in questions related to globalization and development, a thorough knowledge of econometrics, and should be proficient in English.

General conditions

  • The position is open starting September 2018 for two years, with a possibility to extend for a third year.
  • Salary, net of taxes, is of the order of 2.400€ per month. The recruited person benefits from the complete Belgian social insurance scheme (health care, etc.) without additional expenses.
  • IRES will provide the postdoc researcher with office space and computer facilities.
