The news of the passing of Jacques Dreze was a great shock. I met him in 1982 when I started my graduate studies at CORE. He impressed me immediately and was truly one of the greats, in many respects. First of all, he was a person of towering intellect and razor-sharp insights who had a lasting impact on the profession. Secondly, he was extremely generous to others with his time and attention and was, as a human being, critically important to the people who had the good fortune to be around him. I will never forget that on the 25th anniversary of CORE he attributed its success to a climate of profound respect and appreciation for the work of others. He will be greatly missed.
