A POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN ECONOMICS in the field of:

Agricultural and Development economics

Job description

  • The postdoctoral project aims to improve our understanding of conflict hotspots and migration corridors in space and time, in low and middle-income countries;
  • The project will seek to analyze the local determinant of forced migration within and between countries;
  • The project is supported by the Fragility, Conflict, and Migration Initiative under OneCGIAR in collaboration with Liangzhi You from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI);
  • The candidate will work at IRES, in close collaboration with Jean-Francois Maystadt. The economics department in Louvain-la-Neuve provides a vibrant academic environment, with currently 19 faculty members and almost 40 PhD students. The candidate would likely have international travels to do field works and to collaborate with Dr. You at IFPRI’s Washington DC, USA headquarter;
  • The position does not come with any teaching duties.

Profile

  • The candidate must hold of a PhD degree in economics or close to completion. The candidate must have a proven record, of high quality research in the fields of agricultural and/or development economics;
  • The candidate should not have stayed more than 12 months in Belgium during the last three years;
  • The candidate should have the potential to publish in the top journal in economics;
  • The candidate must have a deep interest in questions related to conflict and migration, a thorough knowledge of applied econometrics, and should be proficient in English;
  • The candidate should show some acquaintance in managing large datasets and non-traditional data (GIS, satellite-based, social media, …). Previous experience in machine learning is also an asset.

General conditions

  • The position is open starting 1 February 2024 or as soon as possible for one year initially (due to donor funding restrictions), with a strong possibility to extend for a second, or third year;
  • Salary, net of taxes, is of the order of 2900€ per month. The recruited person benefits from the complete Belgian social insurance scheme (health care, etc.) without additional expenses;
  • IRES will provide the postdoc researcher with office space and computer facilities;
  • Strong support will be given to apply to the FNRS postdoctoral fellowship.
